Neighborhood NIMBYs are about to get a new tool in their arsenal. DNAinfo reports that the New York State Liquor Authority is getting ready to launch an interactive map this month that will let you see what your local bars have been up to (along with any bar in the State). Better than having to file a FOIL-request just to find out if anyone else has been whining about that noisy bar on the block!

The project is meant to consolidate lots of already available data into one go-to spot for concerned citizens. Reportedly, "Once it's live, residents will be able to scroll across the map, zoom in and out, and search active and pending licenses by address, company and business name. When they click on a point, the map will display all license details and disciplinary histories." Distances to churches and schools will also be displayed. And best of all, the whole thing has only cost $75,000, the SLA says. And that money came from a fund specially earmarked for the agency to spend on critical technology upgrades.

Even before the map launches State Senator Daniel Squadron, who helped secure that fund, is trying to take his share of credit, calling the map "a common-sense decision with major payoffs for communities and small businesses." And he doesn't appear to be wrong. The state-wide map (which will be updated nightly) really should be a boon for everybody but bar-owners with something to hide.
