GOAL! The rumors were (sort of) true! Hockey is really coming to Brooklyn...for at least one game. Yup, despite concerns that the Barclays Center was too small for regulation hockey, the much-maligned Atlantic Yards stadium has announced that on October 2, 2012 the Islanders are going to play the New Jersey Devils. In Brooklyn!

"We feel Brooklyn is an untapped hockey market that offers the Islanders with an exciting opportunity to grow its fan base," Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark told Brooklyn Daily regarding the news. The announcement came after Brooklyn Beep Marty Markowitz, a big proponent of the stadium, hinted at the news this weekend in his State of the Borough address.

This is by no means the first time that hockey over the Yards has been suggested. The Islanders have been in renegotiating their deal in Nassau and were hinting left and right about moving to the city last summer.

Unfortunately for those who hope to see this become a regular thing, the NHL seems pretty against the idea. When asked about a move over the weekend, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said he would "find it hard to believe" that the Islanders couldn't figure something out in the 3 1/2 years they have left on their contract. "We don't like to move teams," he added, talking about moving the Phoenix Coyotes back to Winnipeg. But is it really moving if you stay in the same general area?
