The police say that a man, suspected in an earlier carjacking, was fatally shot by an off-duty police officer in the Cypress Hills section of Brooklyn.

Apparently, the 22-year-old suspect had crashed his car into a light pole at Jamaica Avenue and Cyprus Street around 4 a.m. The Post reports that an off-duty officer witnessed the crash and followed the driver, who was wearing a mask, "after seeing him flee the crash carrying a gun."

After a few blocks, the suspect fired a few times at the off-duty police officer, and NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says the cop returned fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at a hospital; his gun was found at the scene. WABC 7 reports that he was "suspected in an earlier shooting, attempted carjacking and a separate successful carjacking in Queens."
