OMG youse guys, could it be that it might actually snow? Yes. Finally! First we have to survive the nasty cold front that passed through the city while we were walking across town this morning. Brrr. Cold, dry air is rushing in behind the front, which is a remnant of the big storm that hit the northwest earlier in the week. Look for a high in the lower 30s, but with northwesterly winds around 15-20 mph it is going to feel much cooler this afternoon.
Now onto the snow! A storm developing over the Tennessee Valley today will move eastward and then up the coast tomorrow. That low will bring plenty of moisture along and the snow is expected to start falling late tonight and last until early Saturday afternoon. Just in time for freeze tag! As of now it looks like 4-6 inches of snow will fall on the city. Greater accumulations are expected to the north and west. There's a distinct possibility that a wedge of warmer air will arrive as the snow begins tapering off. If so we may see a burst of freezing rain or sleet.
A warmer air mass will arrive behind the storm but the snow cover will probably hold Sunday's high to the mid 30s. Another storm system on Monday will likely warm us into the lower 50s and bring a bit of rain.
