It sounds like someone was really trying to put the "beyond" in Bed, Bath And Beyond: the company announced that metal tissue boxes containing low levels of radiation had to be removed from stores in cities across the country, including NY. The company claims there is little risk for people who already bought one of the boxes—but they said the same thing to Bruce Banner, and look how that turned out.
The company was tipped off when shipments bound for California stores set off radiation sensors at a truck scale; it turned out they contained manmade cobalt-60, which is used in medical devices and for other industrial applications. New York health officials said they have already pulled 12 of the silver boxes—which tested positive for radiation—from stores in Westbury, Port Chester, Elmsford and Huntington Station.
"If someone has one of these, they could receive a small radiation dose from it," Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman David McIntyre said. He added that spending about 30 minutes a day near one of the boxes for a year would receive the equivalent of a couple of chest x-rays. Considering how much we watch Lifetime channel, that doesn't seem like an unreasonable amount of time to spend with a tissue box.
