Officer Peter Figoski, A 22-year-veteran of the NYPD and father of four, was shot and killed early this morning while responding to a home invasion in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn in an incident Mayor Bloomberg called a "horrible, depraved criminal attack."

The shooting occurred around 2:20 a.m. when, according to the NYPD, Figoski and his partner, Glenn Estrada, interrupted a home invasion at 25 Pine Street. According to Bloomberg, the pair interrupted "two perpetrators [who] were attacking the person who lived in the downstairs apartment, apparently looking for money." Figoski was at the bottom of a staircase going to the street and was hit once, with an illegal semi-automatic allegedly shot by 27-year-old Lamont Pride. He was shot in the face and quickly transferred to a hospital where, at 7:17 a.m., he was declared dead.

After Figoski had been shot his partner chased after Pride and arrested him, hurting his shoulder in the process. A silver 9mm Ruger semi was found near where Pride was apprehended. A second suspect remains at large—they appear to have stolen "an inexpensive watch and $770 in cash." Figoski, who has worked out of the 75th Precinct for most of his career and whose brothers and brother-in-law were also in the NYPD, leaves behind four daughters.

"You want a reminder of the danger that our men and women in law enforcement face every single day to keep us safe?" Mayor Bloomberg said today. "Look no further than this shooting."
