For someone who spent millions getting himself a third term as the mayor of New York City (about $175 per vote!) Michael Bloomberg certainly seems ready to get back to his Bermuda estate. He's sick of going to all those boring ceremonies ("I can't wait for the last one. You have no idea."), doesn't care what happens here after he's out ("My job is to sustain it for the next 781 days.") and—despite there being 763 days until Bloomberg leaves the building—he has reportedly already started having city agencies write up his legacy.
Why he is so eager to go is hard to tell—after all, as he said last night, he's got his own army here ("I have my own army in the NYPD, which is the seventh biggest army in the world. I have my own State Department, much to Foggy Bottom’s annoyance. We have the United Nations in New York, and so we have an entree into the diplomatic world that Washington does not have," Mayor Bloomberg said.)—but apparently making a record of his record is a really important thing!
"They’re spending a lot of time putting this together," one ranking administration official told The Post. There’s no rule for when mayors are supposed to start preparing for the end of their terms. But more than two years from his December 2013 departure is viewed by Bloomberg’s own top officials as being early—especially considering some of his predecessors did nearly nothing besides leave the building when their time was up.
City Hall spokesman Marc LaVorgna says that it is all about our billionaire mayor from Boston's desire to plan ahead. "We’ve learned from previous administrations the importance of organizing records and how much time it takes," he said.
What we wonder is what hizzoner's minions are going to whitewash out of their histories. Will the Zuccotti raid make it? Certainly Hurricane Irene will get a mention, but what about the Boxing Day blizzard? Not to mention the 2004 Republican National Convention?
