While the rest of the city is occupied with, oh, you know, revolutionary stuff or whatever, the most important news of the century has just been announced: current New York Times dining editor Pete Wells will be the paper's new restaurant critic. Officially.
The announcement finally puts to rest the seemingly endless speculation over who would replace Sam Sifton, and continues the newspaper's tradition of hiring internally. Wells has been Dining Editor for the past five years, and has a bit of experience in the hot seat, thanks to his role as interim critic between Frank Bruni and Sam Sifton in 2009. Susan Edgerley, the former metropolitan editor who was most recently the paper’s top editor for career development, will replace Wells in the Dining Editor position.
“Pete, who is having himself outfitted with a variety of seasonal, local and organic wigs, will take over the critic’s chair in January,” said the Times memo, praising his "superb writing, intimate knowledge of food and restaurants and deep commitment to our dining franchise." The Internet, meanwhile, has already given him a catchy new nickname.
