The Jets seemed poised to take over the AFC East, but they fell flat Sunday night in a 37-16 loss to the Patriots. Tom Brady shredded the defense for 329 yards and three touchdowns, and Mark Sanchez was underwhelming, completing only 20 of 39 passes and getting picked twice. A safety and a Sanchez rushing touchdown had the Jets up with less than two minutes to go in the first half, but Brady drove the Patriots down the field to give them a 13-9 lead at halftime. They made it 23-9 before a Plaxico Burress touchdown made it a one-possession game at the start of the fourth quarter. But the Patriots answered with another Rob Gronkowski TD, and Sanchez threw a pick-six to Rob Ninkovich. The Patriots have a one-game lead and own the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Jets play the Broncos in Denver on Thursday night.
Eli Manning could not conjure up another fourth-quarter comeback, and the Giants followed up their win over the Patriots with a 27-20 loss to the 49ers in San Francisco. The 49ers are 8-1, and the Giants are suddenly 6-3 and one game ahead of the Cowboys. Manning threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns (and two picks) and had his comeback attempt thwarted when a pass was batted down by Carlos Rogers.
The Islanders also had trouble, losing 4-1 to Vancouver in the Pacific Northwest.
