Yesterday's low-key, low-turnout Election Day only provided a few hints toward the nation's mood going into the 2012 presidential election next year. Voters rejected many extreme right measures, while still denying the Democrats a chance to call the election a clear-cut victory. And among the things we learned: Staten Island voters like their incumbent DA, and upstate NY voters reject candidates with artsy nude photos.

Last week, Republican opponents revealed the scandalous news that Monroe County legislator Steve Eckel had two nude photographs on his personal website. Eckel proudly admitted he posed nude for a photography project while getting a fine arts degree in college, but chose to remove the photos from his site anyway. But his unapologetic stand for "art" resulted in him losing his re-election bid to Republican opponent Tony Micciche; he later said while conceding that, "he regrets nothing. Loves his pics."

The biggest local NYC race was the battle for Staten Island DA, between Republican incumbent Daniel Donovan, and Democratic challenger Mike Ryan. Donovan easily took a third-term victory last night, beating Ryan with a bigger margin of victory than he had against him in their 2007 matchup. Donovan took a whopping 70 percent to Ryan's 30 percent, according to unofficial Board of Elections figures. In the Suffolk County executive race, Democrat Steve Bellone easily won against Republican Suffolk Treasurer Angie Carpenter, by more than 30,000 votes. And in Westchester, the Democratic super-majority is hinging on a recount.
