For the first time since Gallup started asking Americans about it in 1969 more people think weed should be legal than don't. That sound you hear? That's millions of Americans coughing their support. According to a Gallup poll released today 50 percent of Americans now support legalization, up from 46 percent last year. Not a bad increase for the "most commonly abused illicit drug" in the country!
And the stats get even more dope-friendly you look at the trends in age groups. While only 49 percent of people aged 50-64 support legalization, 56 percent of 30-49 year olds support it and 62 percent of those aged 18-29 want pot legal. Of course, all the support in the world won't actually get marijuana legalized, but no worries man, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws has some ideas for those looking to work to make everyone's lives a little better in the wake of this poll.
Like support for support for same sex marriage, support for legalized marijuana has been steadily rising (with a blip in 2004) since the mid-1980s. Further, last year in another Gallup poll 70 percent of Americans supported making it legal for doctors to prescribe the drug.
