When it comes to walking the mean streets of Gotham, the most dangerous neighborhood to be a pedestrian is...Midtown Manhattan. According to the data Transportation Alternatives has collected for its recently revamped CrashStat website between 1995-2009 there were 8,604 crashes in Manhattan Community District 5, way ahead of the next most dangerous area, Queens Community District 12 (which includes Jamaica, Hollis and St. Albans) where there were just 4,741 crashes. Averaged over the past 15 years a driver has struck a pedestrian in Midtown every single day. Meanwhile, the safest place to walk around without worry? Bronx Community District 8, which includes Riverdale, Fieldston and Kingsbridge. In the same period of time there have only been 788 crashes there.
So what are the rest of the dangerous areas to walk around? According to CrashStat the five most dangerous neighborhoods for pedestrians are:
- Midtown Manhattan (Manhattan Community District 5) with 8,604 crashes;
- Jamaica, Hollis, St. Albans (Queens Community District 12) with
4,741 crashes; - Flatbush, Ditmas Park, Midwood (Brooklyn Community District 14)
with 3,920 crashes; - Concourse, Highbridge, Mt. Eden (Bronx Community District 4) with
2,938 crashes; - North Shore (Staten Island Community District 1) with 1,944 crashes.
And on the flip side of the coin, the safest hoods are:
- Riverdale, Fieldston, Kingsbridge (Bronx Community District 8) with
788 crashes; - The Rockaways (Queens Community District 14) with 1,012 crashes;
- South Shore (Staten Island Community District 3) with 653 crashes;
- Brighton Beach, Coney Island, Gravesend (Brooklyn Community
District 13) with 1,689 crashes; - West Harlem, Hamilton Heights (Manhattan Community District 9) with
2,045 crashes.
