Wall Street Occupiers weren't the only ones staying up last night—Apple fans across the city were up in the rain, too, excitedly counting down the minutes until the official release of the new iPhone 4S at 8 a.m. this morning.
The first two people in line at Apple's Flagship store were Keenen Thompson and Jessica Mellow, who arrived 18 days ago and have been recording their "urban iCamping adventure" on the blog iPhoneWhatever. They turned down $1,500 to give up their spots in line, with Mellow saying “It’s not about the money, it’s not about the phone, it’s about the experience." Part of "the experience" last night also included an impromptu visit from the team behind the The Milking App, who brought two live cows and a goat to promote their app.
CNet was also live-blogging the scene at Fifth Avenue last night, noting that "Honestly, this launch just doesn't have the same energy and spark as other Apple product launches... My guess is most people who really wanted the iPhone 4S preordered it online." The Post estimated that about 200 people were lined up at the Fifth Ave store this morning, many of whom cited Steve Jobs' recent death as part of the reason they were there.
In the Los Gatos, California, Apple Store, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak was the first in line, camped out with an iPad, a folding armchair and a stash of Diet Dr Pepper. "I want to get mine along with the millions of other fans," Wozniak told CNN.
One of the biggest selling points for the iPhone 4S is Siri, a voice-activated personal assistant, plus a better-quality camera and a new processor that will render data and graphics significantly faster than the iPhone 4.
