U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says that U.S. agencies foiled an Iranian plot to commit "significant terrorist act in the United States"—killing Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to the U.S., Adel A. Al-Jubeir, and bombing the Saudi and Israeli embassies in Washington D.C. ABC News reports, "Bombings of the Saudi and Israeli embassies in Buenos Aires, Argentina, were also discussed, according to the U.S. officials."

Manssor Arbab Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri, were charged with conspiracy to murder a foreign official, use of foreign travel to commit murder-for-hire, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism and more (PDF of complaint) in federal court in New York today. According to the NY Times, "[Holder] said the men were connected to the secretive Quds Force, a division of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps that has carried out operations in other countries. He said that money in support of the plot had been transferred through a bank in New York, but that the men had not yet obtained any explosives."

Apparently Arbabsiar, a naturalized American citizen, was to be paid $1.5 million for the assassination of Al-Jubeir. Shakuri is still at large while Arbabsiar is in custody. Holder said, "The U.S. is committed to holding Iran accountable for its actions."
