Last week, the full lineup for this year's Open House New York weekend was announced, and while dozens of amazing off-limits spaces are already opening their doors, there's always room for a few more, like the retro-fabulous TWA terminal at JFK Airport.
Designed by curve-loving architect Eero Saarinen, the TWA terminal opened in 1962, capturing the all the glamor and coolness of the golden age of flight (see also: Pan Am). It features two narrow, tubular flight wings and a bordello-red lounge area perfect for the mod squad to rest their weary feet. Sadly, however, time was not kind to the terminal, which closed for business in 2001. The terminal was partially revived by the construction of the adjacent JetBlue Terminal 5 in 2005, though it's still a far cry from what it once was.
OHNY is offering the chance to catch a rare glimpse of the unused, un-renovated sections of the Terminal at 1 p.m. on October 16. The tour will feature Charles Kramer, an architect at Beyer Blinder Belle who oversaw the renovation of the terminal's last decades, and James Steven, manager of JFK facilities at the Port Authority, discussing the history and renovation of the space. The best part? No pesky $5 reservations required! [via The Observer]
