This weekend, the who's who of people who think it's their business to tell you how to live your life are meeting in DC for the Value Voters Summit. Somehow, it makes CPAC look like Bonnaroo ("Don't take the brown Werther's, man") but the meeting received a jolt when Robert Jeffress, a Baptist pastor who backs Rick Perry, called Mormonism a "cult." When Politico asked Jeffress if he thought Mitt Romney was a Christian, he replied "No," and said, "Every true, born again follower of Christ ought to embrace a Christian over a non-Christian." OOH Savior fight! Savior fight! So it was Romney's time to shine: “The blessings of faith carry the responsibility of civil and respectful debate. The task before us is to focus on the conservative beliefs and the values that unite us—let no agenda, narrow our vision or drive us apart.”
Sadly enough, Romney was speaking in reference to a different idiot "Christian" speaker, Bryan Fischer, who believes that homosexuals caused the Holocaust and forcefully criticizes Mormonism. “One of the speakers who will follow me today, has crossed that line, I think. Poisonous language doesn’t advance our cause. It’s never softened a single heart nor changed a single mind.” Obvious irony aside, Romney was able to eloquently parry Perry's proxy jabs without actually mentioning it. Unmentioned, was the disgrace that mainstream political candidates are forced to pander to or share a podium with these people. Oh, and Ron Paul won the straw poll. It still doesn't matter.
[UPDATE] It appears that Fischer absolutely killed! We weren't expecting him to perform "Homosexuality Is A Threat To The First Amendment" followed by This Is Not Islamophobia, This Is Islamorealism." With setlists like this he'll be playing Westboro in no time.
