The Humane Society of the U.S. and their Wildlife Land Trust are now offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the person who shot a short-finned pilot whale recently.

The whale (which is part of the dolphin family) washed up in New Jersey, but it's unclear where the shooting took place, and it could have been far away from where it was discovered. According to the HSUS, the whale died shortly after being discovered, and "a necropsy revealed that the whale had been shot in the jaw, causing an infection that left the animal unable to eat. The whale was nearly 300 pounds underweight and it is believed that the injury could have been as old as a month."

Whales are protected by the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the perpetrator(s) could face up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine. NOAA Special Agent Matthew Gilmore is on the case, and if you have any information, contact (800) 853-1964.
