Police believe that the SUV driver who blew a stop sign on a Staten Island street, resulting in a crash that left an 18-year-old man dead and the amputation of a 17-year-old girl's arm, may have been drinking. Brian Pittsley, 25, had fled the grisly crash scene yelling "I don't need this sh--!" only to be arrested by cops in Brooklyn yesterday, exclaiming, "I let you guys catch me."
Pittsley was driving a group of teens—Angel Rivera, 18; Kayla Madden, 17; Denise Russo, 16; Patrick Dary, 18; Christine Brunk, 16; Stanley Weber, 15; and Taylor Milan, 18—in a 1992 Chevy Suburban when he apparently drove through a stop sign at Hillside Terrace at Hylan Boulevard. A Nissan Sentra, driven by 20-year-old Andrew Conte, on Hylan hit the SUV, causing the Suburban to flip and crash into a parked car.
Rivera died at the scene while Madden suffered a serious injury. A retired cop who lives nearby told the Post, "She had a very large open wound [on her right arm] and needed medical attention then. No one was stepping up, so I did, I just took care of it." Robert Friscia made a tourniquet and says, "I kept her coherent. She was going in and out of consciousness. I kept her talking until they took her to the hospital." Madden's arm was eventually amputated; her stepfather said her situation was "touch-and-go."
Russo is in intensive care at Staten Island University Hospital, while the other SUV passengers "suffered injuries ranging from a broken ankle to facial injuries," according to the Advance. Conte suffered "body trauma." Rivera's mother said she allowed him to stay out past his 9 p.m. curfew, "He said, 'Mom, I'm having such a good time out here with my friends. Don't make me come back already, please. Just a little longer.'" The crash occurred at 9:45 p.m.
Pittsley was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, leaving the scene of an accident with a serious injury, and criminally negligent homicide.
