Earlier today President Obama declared New York state a disaster, which means that Albany, Bronx, Clinton, Delaware, Dutchess, Essex, Greene, Montgomery, Nassau, New York, Queens, Rensselaer, Richmond, Rockland, Schoharie, Suffolk, Ulster, Warren, and Westchester counties will all be eligible for federal relief funds. Did you notice that Kings wasn't mentioned? Well Mad Marty Markowitz did. And he's ready to rumble over the omission.
In a statement, he cited the flooding in areas like Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Coney Island, Red Hook, DUMBO and Williamsburg as evidence enough that Brooklyn was slighted. He also said that a section of the BQE "may be unstable" as a result of the storm. Or it could just be a crappy section of a crappy highway! Who knows.
Nevertheless, Markowitz is making sure his anger is known. He added, "Given these facts, I am absolutely dumbfounded that federal officials have excluded Kings County from a disaster declaration for public assistance. I applaud Governor Cuomo and Mayor Bloomberg for requesting this help, and hope that FEMA immediately reverses this dreadful decision and includes Brooklyn."
If huffing and puffing are effective methods, Markowitz will see those dollars in no time.
