Details are still hazy, but it looks like it's official: The MTA will be shutting down tomorrow at noon in preparation for Hurricane Irene. Stay tuned for more updates as Governor Cuomo's full announcement is released.

As we noted this morning, the MTA cannot "guarantee the safety of riders and employees if sustained winds reach above 39 miles per hour." It takes eight hours to shut down the whole system—subways, buses, commuter rails—and there could be lingering delays and service outages into Monday.

Via Daily News, here's what Cuomo has outlined: "The Metropolitan Transit Authority will institute a system-wide shut-down when trains and buses begin their final runs starting at approximately noon on Saturday; the shut-down will include subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, and Access-A-Ride."
