Better pause production on those "Ray Kelly For Mayor" bumper stickers: nine police precincts have seen a surge in crime in recent weeks, including the 34th Precinct in Washington Heights [pdf], and the 90th Precinct in Williamsburg [pdf].

Overall, crime is down by 0.1 percent from last year, but the Post reports that "police brass are fighting tooth and nail to keep the numbers from climbing," as evidenced by the removal of Deputy Inspector José Navarro from his post in Washington Heights.

In Williamsburg, "murder, rape, assault, grand larceny and car theft" have all risen, with 15 rapes being reported there so far this year compared with 4 in 2010. Other areas that have seen a jump in crime include Tremont, in the Bronx [pdf], Borough Park [pdf], Crown Heights [pdf], Carroll Gardens [pdf], and Sheepshead Bay [pdf] in Brooklyn, among others.

The silver lining for Kelly and the Mayor is the fact that crime was down in 43 of the 76 Precincts compared with last year, and there have been 67 fewer shootings this year.
