The legal saga of Nafissatou Diallo, the hotel maid who is accusing former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn of a violent sexual assault, continues. Today, the Wall Street Journal and Daily Beast published articles reporting that Diallo's lawyer was seeking a financial settlement with Strauss-Kahn's lawyers.
Prosecutors have allegedly questioned Diallo's credibility, and the Beast says now they "specifically want to know whether lawyers for luxury-hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo made any offers to stop cooperating with the criminal investigation or to drop the charges during confidential settlement talks back in June. The request in recent days to Diallo's lawyer Kenneth Thompson is the latest sign of how much relations between the Manhattan district attorney's office and Diallo have deteriorated since she first accused Strauss-Kahn of assaulting her after she entered his luxury suite in the Sofitel hotel in New York City to clean it on May 14."
The Manhattan DA's office, at this point, is still pursuing a case against Strauss-Kahn, who is out on bail. His attorneys insist that any sexual encounter was consensual and that Diallo's intentions all along have been for financial gain. The WSJ reports, "Ms. Diallo's lawyers prepared a confidentiality agreement for the meeting, one of the people said. The discussions occurred during a 19-day period when Ms. Diallo's lawyers didn't permit her to be interviewed by prosecutors, the people familiar with the matter say." Thompson denies the allegations.
And DNAinfo's Murray Weiss has more allegations that could undermine the Manhattan DA's case, such as a reason why Diallo's medical report showed bruising—she had a sexual encounter the previous day.
Diallo, who went public in order to increase pressure on the DA's office, is also suing Strauss-Kahn.
