A few weeks ago, we heard about the High Line's plan to open a temporary roller rink under the newly opened Phase II of the park, and yesterday, the rink became reality, with a little help from kids from the Hudson Guild, professional skaters from the Central Park Dance Skaters Association, the Gotham Girls Roller Derby, and, of course, Susan Sarandon. Photographer Katie Sokoler was on hand to capture the rolling good time (forgive us)...until disaster struck:

"I decided to stay after the press preview to watch it open up to the public," Sokoler said. "The rink seems like a great place but one thing I was a little concerned about was the ground. It seems very uneven and a bit dangerous. When you're off the rink, the ground goes down on an incline so it's hard to stand still and a lot of people fall (including me). Within ten minutes of the rink opening to the public a girl either sprained or broke her ankle! She was crying while people were putting ice on her leg. An ambulance came, put her on a stretcher and took her to the hospital."

We reached out to the High Line to find out if anyone else was injured, but are still waiting for more details. (But the High Line did confirm that you do have to sign a release form before lacing up you skates.) Should you wish to tempt fate, the Rink will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with an admission fee of $10 children and $12 for adults, which includes a pair of rental skates, through September 26.
