A month after the State Senate voted to legalize same-sex marriage, hundreds of people are currently lining up around Centre Street to get married today. But last night in Niagara Falls, two grandmothers became the first legally married gay couple in NY State. And then they sealed the deal by dancing to Lady Gaga's "The Edge Of Glory!"
Buffalo residents Kitty Lambert and Cheryle Rudd were married just after midnight Saturday at Niagara Falls' State Park's Luna Island. The women, who have been vocally fighting for marriage equality in New York for some time, were joined by hundreds of friends and family, including their five grown children, to celebrate the occasion.
In honor of the first ceremony, the Falls' water cascade was lit with rainbow-colored lights "in a colossal, shimmering hommage to the multicolored gay pride flag." By the end of ceremony, which was officiated by Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster, the words "by the laws of the state of New York..." were drowned out by thunderous applause.
We'll have lots of coverage of this historic day, as NY becomes the sixth and largest U.S. state to legalize gay marriage. So if you have any photos of gay nuptials, or photos of friends, tag them as "Gothamist" on Flickr, or send them to [email protected].
