Days after the murder and dismemberment of 8-year-old Hasidic boy Leiby Kletzky, police have continued their intensive search of the Kensington home of confessed child murderer Levi Aron for any more evidence of improper contact with children in the past. According to CBS and ABC, detectives have been carting off bags of evidence from the residence, completely dug up his backyard, and begun the process of examining all his computers. In recent days, neighbors have alleged that Aron had an obsession with young boys, and had tried to kidnap other children.
In addition, his first ex-wife Diana Diunov, who is currently in jail in Connecticut for wire fraud, posited yesterday that Aron killed Leiby because he wanted to be famous: "He always believed that he can become a famous singer one day. That he can write songs...For him, the meeting of this little poor boy was a chance to shine into media and make himself known." Police say that Aron vacationed in Disney World over July 4th weekend, at the same time that the Casey Anthony trial was reaching its conclusion, and the News implies that Aron may have been influenced by Anthony, who also was accused of smothering a child to death.
But Aron, who loved karaoke and recorded duets online, told his ex-wife on the phone that he had gone to Orlando to live out a dream and audition for "American Idol," even though there were no real auditions that weekend. Instead, they are sure he went to "compete" in the year-round "America Idol Experience" attraction, which is a fake version of the reality show. As the News puts it, "Aron could only have felt all the more a loser as he strode back through the crowds of kids at America's childhood capital."
The family of Leiby is still mourning their son in the insular community of Borough Park. His father, Nachman Kletzky, had been too distraught to attend the 8-year-old boy's funeral on Thursday, but he was seen going to Temple yesterday morning for Sabbath services. A woman who attended told the News, "There were no tears in his eyes. On the Sabbath, we concentrate on God and don't show our grief." The rest of Leiby's family is doing everything they can to shield the details of his horrific murder from his mother: "The mother doesn't know the details, the terrible things that were done. We're trying to do everything to make sure she doesn't know," the boy's grandfather, Isaac Forster, told Assemblyman Dov Hikind.
