Around 3 a.m. this morning a Land Rover SUV carrying seven people flew off the FDR around 23rd street in Kips Bay, landed on the passenger side of a taxi 15 feet below, and rolled off onto its wheels. The cab was only carrying its driver. Altogether, eight people were injured, including two critically.
A witness tells CBS he heard "steel scraping against concrete" and screams, so he ran to help, pulling a man out of the wreckage. "He was unconscious and I shook him," the good samaritan said, "The first thing he asked me was if his wife was alive. I told him his wife was alive.”
Authorities tell us that no charges have been filed in the accident, but that final decision is pending an investigation of the crash. The driver of the SUV reportedly told police that another driver cut him off, so he swerved to miss it, hit the barrier and rolled off the elevated highway. "If that cab wasn't there, those people would not be here today," the witness tells CBS.
