Police say that a man and a woman, both naked, parked their SUV on the Tappan Zee Bridge, climbed on top of the vehicle and jumped while holding hands. Rescuers were able to pull the woman, in her late 20s or early 30s, out alive, but she died from her injuries. The male, in his 40s, is in extremely critical condition at Nyack Hospital.
Members of a construction crew working on the bridge noticed the couple get on top of a Chevy Tahoe. Witnesses told the Journal News, "The woman appeared to go over the side of the rail first, either slipping or falling as she went over... The man appeared to follow." According to Tarrytown Patch, "The contractor, Tutor Perini, had a boat in the water which picked up both individuals and shuttled them to the Rockland side of the water in Nyack. "
The State Police say the drop from the area where they jumped was 175-250 feet. There have been other suicide attempts (some successful) from the bridge; "suicide" phones were installed a few years ago.
