As he confronts a higher-than-2010-so-far murder rate, Newark Mayor Cory Booker spoke today two shootings last night that killed one 15-year-old and left 11 others wounded. And apparently, the violence was related to a "weeks-long drug dispute."

The Star-Ledger reports, "The assaults are part of an ongoing drug dispute, which Booker described as a "back and forth" between rival narcotics crews... While he wouldn't clarify how many shootings the drug dispute has been linked to this month, Booker said police are trying to see if there is a connection between last night's outburst of violence and a wild 60-minute span on the morning of July 5 that killed three people and injured two others." Booker held a press conference and said many of the victims had criminal records. Of the murder victim, Booker added, "There is an innocence there, no matter what he was involved in."

Booker, who is trying to transform the city into one that attracts big business and a new NBA team, Tweeted today, "Last night's a reminder: We all must do better. Its not about blame its about us all taking responsibility," and "We must come together as a community 2 stop this level of violence." Last week, the Newark City Council approved an ordinance that requires eateries with less than 20 people staying open past 9 p.m. to hire security guards.
