Two months and ten days to go until the 9/11 Memorial opens, so naturally the project is scrambling to raise an additional $3 million dollars. The last minute funds are for things like a security fence and a new visitor check-in area, according to Port Authority executive director Chris Ward.
The PA is scrambling for the cash because it doesn't want to pull it out of its budget. Yesterday it approved $4 million in additional construction contracts but said that $3 million of that is going to have to come out of somebody else's pockets.
“This is not that someone hasn’t been pulling their weight, it’s rather that the necessary pieces that you need to put in place have grown over time," Ward said. "This is an enormously complex operation, that you’re seeing construction estimates change and grow over time.”
The news comes as people are already smarting about the fact that the Memorial will not have bathrooms when it opens (though will get them later) not to mention the expected $20 admission price when the 9/11 Museum opens in 2012. However officials say that, funding or no, the memorial will still open on 9/11/11.
