The Egyptian banking executive who was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a maid at the Pierre Hotel decided to plead guilty. Mahmoud Abdel Salam Omar entered the plea yesterday and was sentenced to five days community service. His lawyer said he completed the community service already (soup kitchen work) and the plea was "the most expeditious way" for him to return to his ailing wife.
According to reports, Omar, a 74-year-old prominent businessman, allegedly asked for tissues and when the maid arrived, he "quickly locked the door behind her" and "allegedly grabbed her breasts and began kissing her on the lips and neck." The maid was able to get away and told a supervisor (there was a delay with hotel management contacting police) and Omar was arrested, but he made bail quickly, unlike another powerful suspected attacker of hotel maids.
Prosecutors said, "The victim has been advised of and is satisfied with this resolution." The victim has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Omar, and Omar's lawyer Lori Cohen pointed out that the victim initially claimed it was rape, "Service of a $5 million lawsuit speaks to her motivation from the beginning - loudly and clearly."
