So now that Anthony Weiner has cast off the shackles of public office, and the tug-of-war for control of his old district has begun, what will the former Congressman do next? He may not be speaking at Brooklyn Technical High School graduation tonight, but he has already gotten a couple of tantalizing job offers: Entourage creator Doug Ellin has asked Weiner to cameo as himself on the final season of the HBO show. And Hustler impresario Larry Flynt very sincerely offered Weiner a high-paid position in the Internet group of Flynt Management Group. Just like he did with Carl Paladino!
Eliot Spitzer, who has a bit of experience when it comes to sex scandals derailing highly promising political careers, weighed in on Weiner's current situation on an "In the Arena" segment on Capital Tonight last night. He gave some advice as to how he might begin to reassemble his life:
It’s not going to be an easy time; I can tell him that..You sit, you reflect, you figure out what you did wrong. Why you did it wrong. What you can contribute back to society. You then go out and you try to do things you think will contribute. You begin to lead a life and try to put it back together, and you spend time with your family. I hope that’s what he does.
Many other politicians lauded Weiner the day after his resignation, while President Obama agreed with Spitzer's sentiments regarding Weiner and his family. He also offered his belief that things would work out just fine for Weiner and his wife Huma Abedin. "Obviously it's been a tough incident for him, but I'm confident that they'll refocus and he'll refocus and they'll end up being able to bounce back," he told "Good Morning America."
But that is a pretty big question still: will Abedin stay with Weiner? She was nowhere to be seen yesterday during his resignation news conference. According to the Washington Post, it's not just coincidence that he resigned the day after she returned from an overseas trip with her boss, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: "Those close to both say there had been many phone calls between Weiner, his wife and the Clintons." Now the couple has gone to the Hamptons for some alone time, amidst a hazy future.
But there is one part of his future that isn't obscure: his pension. Although he won't have Congress’ generous health care plan anymore, his combined pension and lawmaker's savings plan (similar to 401k) could be worth $1.12 million to $1.28 million.
