Know how to snag all the ladies? Forget smooth-talking and fancy bouquets—the correct answer is with a sweet, sweet express bus. That's what one imagines driver Edward Meehan was thinking when he allegedly used his express bus as his own private love shack, cruising over to Staten Island after his shift, parking his empty chariot "on a quiet, treelined avenue," and escorting a mystery woman on board for a quickie rendezvous. The icing on the cake is that Meehan then told MTA dispatchers that he was stuck in traffic and collected overtime for his supposed extra work.
Meehan, who has been suspended a whopping 14 times prior to this for everything from speeding to running red lights, claims "I was just talking to a friend for a little while. I'm happily married." The Transit division suspended Meehan without pay last week after a Staten Island tipster reported seeing the X22 bus parked in his neighborhood three times over the course of two weeks. The tipster reported that each time, the same woman would board, stay for 20-30 minutes, then walk to a car and drive off (which seems to defeat the purpose of sneaking around with a bus driver, no?).
While Meehan maintains his innocence, MTA Inspector General Barry Kluger said, "We believe, based on all the facts, he should be terminated." Perhaps Meehan has a new gig awaiting him as one Mr. Leon Phelps's sidekick? You be the judge:
