Plans for NYU's Washington Square South Superblock
NYU's got a new scheme for luring the best and brightest from around the world, and for once it doesn't involve erecting more massive, unconventional-looking buildings on scarce Greenwich Village land. NYU is partnering with the University of the People, a free nonprofit online school that, according to university officials, has "attracted 1,000 English-speaking students from 115 countries, including Haitians who have been living in tent cities since the earthquake in January 2010, Sudanese refugees, and a considerable number of students from China, Indonesia, Nigeria and Vietnam."
In the fall of 2012, NYU's highly selective Abu Dhabi campus is expected to start admitting top students from the University of the People, though no specific number of slots have yet been promised. As long as the students aren't gay and they don't get addicted to Blackberrys, this will be a great opportunity for everyone involved.
“It’s almost unbelievable,” said Shai Reshef, the Israeli entrepreneur who founded University of the People two years ago. “Most of our students had no alternative for higher education before we opened the gates for them, and now the most successful may be able to further pursue their dreams by attending one of the best universities in the world.”
