As more details of his sextracurricular activities keep coming, randy Representative Anthony Weiner is maybe depressed and definitly being hounded by the press as his political prospects with the public are being polled left and right.
Weiner reportedly spent yesterday in his office calling supporters to ask them for their continued patronage. But as far as other politicians go, he's not getting much traction. And to make it worse the Republicans are now pushing his Democratic peers to return money they've received from Weiner. Most, however, seem to be waiting for the ethics review before they give up any cash—these are politicians we're talking about! At the same time, Weiner's friends are "worried about the toll" all of this is taking on the Congressman, "who has worked only in politics as an adult."
And while all of that was going on, NY1-Marist and SurveyUSA for WABC-TV yesterday both polled 500 different New Yorkers on the question of whether Weiner should resign. And 51 percent and 46 percent, respectively, say he should stay. But when it comes to his chances for moving into Gracie Mansion in 2013 however, the numbers look less safe. According to the WABC poll 43 percent of New Yorkers are already planning not to vote for Weiner while 56 percent of those polled by NY1 said Weiner shouldn't even try to become, in the words of the Post, "Mayor Crotch."
Really though any serious discussion of the 2013 mayoral election are probably premature. As Assemblyman Keith Wright put it to the News, "A year and a half is a lifetime in politics. There will be some wild cards out there regardless of what the established political landscape looks like."
