Between gangs of wild women, rioting teenagers and general violence, the West Village has been having some troubled times lately and the NYPD is finally trying to do something about it: They've called in the cavalry.
Though overall crime in the area is down 3.2 percent, police data indicates there has recently been "a 27.9 percent increase in robbery arrests and a 14.3 percent spike in felony assault arrests" in the West Village. So the police are sending in mounted reinforcements to watch over the area, especially the increasingly tough strip that is Christopher Street from Seventh over to the water.
A good thing too, since residents and business owners are increasingly unnerved by the escalating scenes. "This year is by far the worst. Our customers are afraid," Boots and Saddle bar owner Robert Ziegler told the Post.
Of course actually persuading the raucous crowds on the street—many of whom come to the area via the PATH and feel it is their turf—is easier said than done. "We come here every weekend to party," one 19-year-old from Jersey told the tabloid. "Where else we gonna make trouble? If they want us [to leave], they can kiss our asses."
