A bill is in the State Assembly and the push to bring marriage equality to New York is in full swing, but a new poll shows that maybe New Yorkers aren't quite as open to gay marriage as previous polls have implied.

Though an earlier poll found 58 percent of New York voters say they support making same-sex marriages legal, a new NY1-Marist poll found, with a 4 percent margin of error, that only "50 percent of respondents say gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to marry" while "25 percent say they should be able to form civil unions only and 25 percent say there should be no legal recognition."

Opposition to marriage equality comes mostly from men, Republicans and Tea Partiers and non-whites. Only 44 percent of men and 44 percent of non-whites support marriage equality. 55 percent of women and 57 percent of whites support letting men marry men and women marry women.

Support for marriage equality dips even further when surveyors asked about it in regards to personal beliefs. Couched that way 53 percent of adults in the state say they believe marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

This new poll may make things harder in Albany, where the gay-friendly Governor Cuomo has made it clear that a marriage equality bill shouldn't even bother being sent to the Republican-controlled Senate until the votes are in the bag (similar bills have passed in the Assembly three times now).
