A new NY Times/CBS News poll shows Americans are not happy with how things are going, with 70% saying the country is going in the wrong direction, 57% disapproving of how President Obama is handling the economy and 63% disapproving of how the Republicans are handling the economy. The Times says, "Americans are more pessimistic about the nation’s economic outlook and overall direction than they have been at any time since President Obama’s first two months in office, when the country was still officially ensnared in the Great Recession."
You can see how respondents answered various questions, like "Do you think providing health coverage for the poor is the responsibility of the federal government?" (56% overall believe it is; 25% of Republicans agree, while 61% of Independents and 73% of Democrats say yes), in this graphic. Interestingly, even the majority of Republicans believe that the government should provide health care for the elderly (56%) and agree that federal taxes should be raised for those households making more than $250,000 (55%)—about three-quarters of overall respondents agree with those concepts.
As for Obama's approval ratings, 46% approve...while 45% disapprove.
