Sad news from the TV On The Radio camp this afternoon: a statement on the band's website announces that their bassist, Gerard Smith, has died.

"We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer," the band writes. They had initially announced Smith's diagnosis last month, with the note that "Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care." Smith was not playing with band on their current spring tour, though five shows this week and next have been cancelled.
