Apparently PrimeTel Communications is under the impression that people are willing to use venues other than the Internet for their pornography needs. Some people are just old fashioned, and aren't willing to give up with warmth of a 1-800 sex hotline for the cold glow of their computer screen. So they'll be happy to know that you can call almost 1.7 million random 1-800 numbers and be directed to sex hotline.
Records show that PrimeTel has bought nearly 1.7 million numbers—like 1-800-WORSHIP, 1-800-CHICAGO and 1-800-METALLICA—most of which are redirected to services offering "one-on-one talk with a nasty girl" for $2.99 a minute. The purchases are completely legal, since they're bought quickly after previous users give them up. Currently, they own a quarter of all 1-800 numbers in the U.S. and Canada. And though the Federal Communications Commission seems pissed, the most they can really accuse them of is "hoarding."
Other chat line numbers include 1-800-FIRETIP, which used to be the FDNY's safety hotline, and one number mistakenly printed on a Republican National Committee flyer. Sorry, neither 1-800-NEWYORK nor 1-800-LOVENYC will get you connected to a girl who loves to party, but let us know if you find one!
