[UPDATE BELOW] In December, Community Board 3 voted to approve a plan to demolish buildings along Second Avenue, including famous East Village dive Mars Bar, and replace them with affordable and market-rate housing. And it appears the end is coming soon. Reader Michelle Kaminer took this photo yesterday afternoon of the latest message to get painted outside of the bar: "Thanks For The Memories." Then again, if you were actually sober enough to have any memories of Mars Bar you didn't do it right.
The building will be demolished and the bar reopened in a shiny new building, which owner Hank Penza is excited about, but for anyone who hasn't experienced the joy (and fear) of gazing at all the junk adorning the bathrooms, your last chance is fast approaching. Finished, the sign looks like this, and EVGrieve hopes that the sign is just in "anticipation of the next art show at the Mars Bar starting this coming Sunday." As for when the bar will actually be closing, once source at the bar told NYC the Blog "that's privileged info, I don't even know when."
[UPDATE] A woman who declined to give her name at Mars Bar told us that there is no definite date on when they'll be closing, but that it'll be "sometime before the first of next year." Mars Bar New Year's Eve sendoff anyone?
