Just when you think you've got the NYPD pegged, they throw you a curve. We thought they were hell bent on hassling cyclists, but here we have video of them spontaneously arresting a man for "ridiculing" a cyclist as they issue a summons for biking on the sidewalk. An unidentified passerby scolds the cyclist as he strolls by, saying, "You're a grown man, you know better than that!" (The cyclist wisecracks, "I just got my training wheels off and I'm afraid of the streets.") Although the heckler has walked away, several cops pour out of the police van to teach the man a lesson in manners. Luckily backup arrives before the guy uses any salty language! Here's an instant YouTube classic:

With incredulous shouts of "FOR WHAT?! FOR WHAT?!" the man is taken away in handcuffs. (The official charges: harassment, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.) We're guessing the NYPD's message here is, "We'll handle hassling the cyclists, thank you very much." Where's Mookie to throw a trash can through a window? [Via NYC the Blog]
