Back in 2008, we got excited over news that a new multiplex cinema would be opening in movie-starved North Brooklyn. At that time, it was predicted that Cassandra Cinemas on Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg would open in the spring of 2009. Cut to 2011, and the thing still hasn't opened, but the Wall Street Journal reports that next month the neighborhood will see action in three theaters in what is now called Nitehawk. And the best part is that moviegoers will be permitted to order food and drink alcohol during the picture show!
According to the Journal, "For every two seats there's a small, underlit table from which to dine. During movies, patrons will be able to write down orders for the wait staff, which will have a separate entrance connecting them directly to the kitchen." On the ground floor, there's a restaurant and bar, and sometimes the menus expand to match the movies. As Matthew Viragh, the 33-year-old executive director of the cinema explains, if the theater were to screen Steve Martin's The Jerk, the restaurant could serve pizza in a cup. What a concept! We're looking forward to digging into 96 oz. steaks when they screen John Candy's The Great Outdoors, and oatmeal with red "syrup" during Eddie Murphy's The Golden Child!
