The NY State Lottery office confirmed that the winning ticket for the $319 million Mega Millions jackpot—which was sold in Albany—was claimed earlier this week. Lottery spokeswoman Carolyn Hapeman said, "Late in the day [on Monday], we got a call saying, 'Can we come in?' As expected, they were busy meeting with the people they wanted to meet with before they came in here." People being lawyers and financial consultants. It's believed the winners were seven state employees, which means each one would get over $19 million (after taxes).
Apparently, there was an eighth person who usually joined the lottery ticket pool, but he decided to sit this one out. According to the Post, local deli owner Jill Cook says the group of IT workers had asked the colleague to join in, "The word is that when they were going around the office asking who wanted in on the pool, one guy said no, that he wasn't feeling lucky. They asked him twice. They said, 'Are you sure?' and he said yeah, he was going to pass this time. I feel horrible for him."
The winners work at the state's Homes and Community Renewal offices. The Times Union reports, "At least one of the seven is a woman, according to several people who know the winners. Several co-workers reached by the Times Union said they were told by superiors not to speak to reporters about the matter. 'All we're trying to do is to respect their wishes that their privacy be maintained and protected,' said James Plastiras, the housing agency's spokesman." The workers have not been to work this week but they have not officially resigned yet. They will get the big check at a press conference tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. (winners are required to appear in public for the check; a few years ago, one winner accepted it wearing sunglasses and revealing little about himself).
