Oh, this month is contradicting folklore big time. March came in like a lamb. The first couple of days were sunny and slightly warmer than normal. To complete the flip the month is going to go out like a lion. A cold, wet lion. With snow. Before the king of the beasts arrives, though, we've got a very lamb-like day in store. The enormous high pressure system, which at one point covered nearly the entire continent east of the Rockies, is finally succumbing to an upper-level trough that's moving across the country. Look for the temperature to top out around 50 degrees today under mostly sunny skies.
The first ground assault on the retreating high will be a low pressure system that will pass well to our south tonight. That storm will be far enough away that there's only a slight chance of showers overnight. More importantly, it will set the stage for what could be a significant early-spring nor'easter, especially north of the city. Old Man Jeter better dress warmly tomorrow as the weather's going to be pretty crappy for the Yankees home opener. A steady rain is expected all afternoon and the high will be in the mid 40s. In the city, snow may mix in with that rain from tomorrow night into Friday. The Hudson Valley and portions of Connecticut away from the coast may see a significant amount of snow.
Rain, occasionally mixed with snow, will last until Friday evening. Friday's high will be an April Fool's joke-worthy 42 degrees. But here's the good news. The next couple of days will likely be the last cold days of the season. Saturday should warm into the upper 40s and all of next week will see highs in the 50s.
