A pedestrian in the Bronx and bicyclist in Queens were victims of separate hit-and-run crashes over the weekend. In the Bronx, police quickly rounded up a suspect: Seth Johnson, 35, who was allegedly intoxicated at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday and fatally struck Thomas Riley, 23, who was trying to flag a cab on East Fordham Road near Bathgate Avenue. Police sources tell the Post that Johnson stopped and got out of his minivan after the accident, but when a witness tried to grab him, he drove off.
But the witness was able to provide a description of the minivan, and Johnson was pulled over on the Cross Bronx Expressway. Besides the vehicle's description, police may have also been tipped off by the massive hole in the windshield, the cracked headlight and a large dent on the hood, the Daily News reports. Riley was pronounced dead at St. Barnabus hospital. Johnson was charged with drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and criminally negligent homicide.
The Daily News also reports that a bicycle deliveryman is on life-support at Elmhurst Hospital Center Sunday after an SUV hit him in Corona about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. A witness says the driver was trying to beat the light when he hit the cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet. The driver fled the scene, but police later took an unidentified man into custody.
