Four New York Times reporters covering the ongoing conflict in Libya have gone missing, the paper reports today. Editors at the Gray Lady last had contact with the journalists yesterday morning and have received second-hand reports that the group had been swept up by Libyan government forces, but nothing has been confirmed [PDF].
“We have talked with officials of the Libyan government in Tripoli, and they tell us they are attempting to ascertain the whereabouts of our journalists,” Mr. Keller said. “We are grateful to the Libyan government for their assurance that if our journalists were captured they would be released promptly and unharmed.”
...
“Their families and their colleagues at The Times are anxiously seeking information about their situation, and praying that they are safe,” Mr. Keller said.
The missing journalists are reporters Anthony Shadid (two-time winner of the Pulitzer for foreign reporting), Stephen Farrell (who was already kidnapped by the Taliban in 2009), and photographers Tyler Hicks and Lynsey Addario. We sincerely hope they are ok.
