Street racing may look like fun in the movies but this is why it is a bad idea in real life. Even if you get through the race okay, the people on the road with you might not be so lucky.
On March 5 Jamie and Christopher Loggia were returning home from a Sweet 16 on the Belt Parkway in Queens when, according to the couple, a number of other cars started speeding around them, weaving in and out of traffic. Eventually Jamie lost control of the vehicle and it flipped multiple times, sending both to the hospital with serious injuries.
"I lost control of the car and then we flipped. I'm not sure how many times we flipped," Jamie told the News in a phone interview. The couple was lucky to get out of the accident alive, though it is going to take some time for them to get close to normal. Jamie broke bones in her shoulder, wrist and hand and had lacerations on the back of her head, while Christopher suffered a shattered pelvis, punctured lung, fractured spine and injuries to his spleen. According to the couple, because of the months their recovery will take, Jamie has had to give up her job as a nanny.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the crash as a hit-and-run, as they have not found any witnesses to corroborate drag-racing cars. Still, considering the street racing stories that seem to pop up every year, this is as good a time as any to remind you not to do it.
