Perhaps, bored with day tripping to Bermuda, Mayor Bloomberg thought a really fun way to spend a rainy St. Patrick's Month weekend would be to march in not one, not two, but three St. Patrick's parades this weekend. Or maybe Hizzoner thought all that marching might make up for that "inebriated Irish hanging out the windows" line? Either way our diminutive billionaire leader from Boston was all about the luck of the Irish this weekend.
First up Mayor Mike hit up the Rockaway Queens parade where he got a warm welcome of "Go back to Manhattan!" and "Take the A train home!" Maybe going to march in a neighborhood famous for its city employees (teachers and firemen, especially) might not be the best idea when you are fighting with them over their jobs?
The Mayor's second and third appearances fared much better. At the Queens St. Pats Parade For All parade and the Staten Island parade there were far fewer jeers to be heard. Not that they weren't there. The Times reports there were scattered boos" to go with the scattered rainstorms.
Meanwhile the rainfall kept attendance at the Sunday parades down. On Staten Island, for instance, last year's estimated attendance of 100,000 was halved, according to the Advance. Even the lure of the now-celebrity PS 22 chorus—who, perhaps to deflect boos, were placed with Bloomberg in the parade—couldn't bring out the people.
The unruly even stayed in, it seems. The NYPD only issued 50 summons and made one arrest at Staten Paten yesterday, down from 12 arrests and 163 summons last year.
