Good news for everybody who loves Faggots: The classic British dish, akin to a large meatball with a texture that straddles the line between meatloaf and blood sausage, is now on the menu at the new Upper East Side gastropub Jones Wood Foundry. We were not very familiar with Faggots the food—the word also refers to a bundle of sticks or, in England, cigarettes—but once we started doing a little research on this delicacy, we got very excited to toss a few Faggots down our gaping throats. In 2003, the BBC covered the revival of what was then a forgotten British dish:
The Doody family from Wolverhampton has been crowned The Faggot Family in a national competition, and to kick off their reign they will launch National Faggot Week. "The nation knows that the Cornish pasty, Yorkshire pudding, haggis and fish and chips are great British dishes, but all too often the faggot is left off that list," said Janet Doody. Her husband Fred added: "It's unfair because faggots were a British delicacy long before any of the others. "The great British faggot is full of flavour and a great belly warmer at this time of year."
So let us maturely note that we've got Doodys to thank for Faggots. At Jones Wood Foundry—which serves a pretty wide-ranging and delicious menu of upscale pub grub in a convivial backroom—you can enjoy Faggots for just $19!
[*Our publisher is obviously so insecure about his sexuality that he won't allow us to use the word "Faggots" in a headline.]
