[UPDATE BELOW]
Around 4 a.m. a reader sent us this photo of a cab crash on Union Square West around 15th Street, saying the "taxi went the wrong way." We figured the driver may have gotten mixed up driving north from University Place (Union Square West turns southbound only at 14th Street), but the NYPD tells us it's even crazier than that.
According to police, a cab driver got into an argument with the passenger in the East Village. Somehow, the passenger managed to get out of the car, kicked the driver out and start driving. The passenger then crashed into a light pole on Union Square West, and suffered minor injuries. He has since been arrested.
Police also confirmed to us that there was a second accident involving a car in Union Square last night. Late last night a pedestrian was struck at Union Square East and 15th Street, but the driver fled the scene.
[UPDATE]NBC reports that the pedestrian struck at Union Square East, a 28-year-old man, is currently in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital. They also report that the crashed cab's hijacker was intoxicated at the time.
